Getting Started with Literary Analysis – Level 2 Sentence Template | The Broader Inference

Add a layer of depth to your literary insights with a level 2 sentence template.

Broader Inference: Instead of writing our first impressions evoked by a literary choice as was the case in proximal inference, broader inference requires us to think about the deeper meaning of the proximal inference in relation to the context of the text.

For example, if we reflect back on the proximal inference of “sneakiness” and “evasion” as a result of the use of the simile “crept like a rat”, the broader inference may lie in how the qualities of sneakiness and evasion characterize that character in the story. For instance, the broader inference might be as follows: This suggests that the “suspicious man” is an unreliable presence that can escape at the tap of a finger.
